What Does CBD Feel Like?
CBD is a naturally occurring compound from the hemp plant, and many people make it part of their daily wellness routine. If you haven’t tried it before, you may be wondering: what does CBD feel like?
Everyone’s experience is different, depending on the form you use, the amount, your size and more. If you’re thinking about trying CBD, call our team at 303.442.2983, send us a message through our website chat or book an appointment at our Boulder office, and we’ll gladly help you find a good place to start. For a full introduction to hemp and CBD, read our guide, What Is CBD?
So, how does CBD feel?
First, what it doesn’t feel like: CBD doesn’t cause a high. At a typical serving, most people describe the feeling as subtle, a sense of calm and balance rather than anything dramatic. Many say they notice it most as part of a consistent routine, rather than all at once.
CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system, which researchers are studying for its role in keeping the body in balance. How it feels for you may depend on how and when you use it:
- As part of your morning routine. Many people like a tincture with breakfast as a steady moment of calm to start the day.
- In the evening. A tincture, a warm bath or a balm can become part of a relaxing wind-down.
- On the skin. Topicals like our balms and massage oil are about how they feel on the skin: warming, cooling or simply soothing and moisturizing.
How long does CBD take to work?
This varies from person to person, and it may take some experimenting to find the serving that feels right for you. The form you choose also makes a difference:
- Tinctures under the tongue. Absorbed fairly quickly, often within about 15 minutes.
- Softgels and capsules. These pass through your digestive system first, so they can take one to two hours.
- Topicals. Balms and oils are applied to the skin, and you’ll feel their texture and scent right away.

A Weekend Retreat at Home: DIY in 6 Steps
Are you longing for a weekend retreat? What if you could have one at home, a time to check out of life’s busyness and into calm and solitude? When home is also where we work, it can be hard to feel truly relaxed, because there’s little separation between work and play. We all still need time to decompress.
Here are six steps to create a restorative 24 hours at home. Find your next free day, mark it off for you, and get started.
1. Set the scene
This step is the most important. Small changes to your environment can have a big impact, so choose an area of your home and make it calm and comfortable. Make a playlist, choose your aromatherapy, light a few candles (safely) and gather comfortable clothes and blankets. Let the others in your home know your plans, so you can minimize distractions.
2. Deep rest
Deep rest is different from deep sleep. It includes your whole being, not just your body: reading, meditation or gentle yoga, to name a few. Before you begin, smooth our CBD Dream Balm onto your neck, temples, wrists and between your toes, and let its calming aroma set the tone.
3. Plan to nourish yourself
Retreats offer fresh, nutrient-dense meals, so plan yours in advance. A slow-cooker meal full of vegetables will be hot and ready when you are, or simply make a golden milk latte in your favorite mug. Here’s our Cinnamon CBD golden milk tutorial for inspiration.
4. Enjoy a self-massage
Massage is a wonderful way to ease muscle tension and help you unwind. Take this time to check in with your body, and massage our lavender-scented CBD Massage Oil into your shoulders, arms, legs and feet with slow, gentle strokes.
5. Go tech-free
Let’s face it: we rarely get a break from our phones. To make your retreat truly restful, put your devices away for the whole “getaway.” Keep a notebook nearby in case you want to jot something down.
6. Have a spa moment
Give your skin some extra care with our Skin Care Bundle, which covers the essential steps with certified organic botanicals. Start with the Nourish CBD & Manuka Honey Mask, refresh the look of fine lines with Renew Eye Serum and find your glow with Glow Skin Serum. Leave your mask on a little longer, and say a few affirmations in the mirror as you smooth on your serums.
A weekend retreat doesn’t take much beyond making the time and space. What makes it special is the intention and the little details you choose. We hope you’ll set aside some time soon to pour into you.
Your Partner in Women’s Health: Making Breast Self-Awareness a Ritual
Regular screening, as recommended by your healthcare provider, is one of the best ways to take care of your breast health. Getting to know how your breasts normally look and feel, what many experts call breast self-awareness, is another: it helps you notice changes and bring them to your doctor early.
A monthly self-exam is a convenient, no-cost way to build that awareness at any age. And it doesn’t have to feel clinical. Here’s how we turn it into a nurturing ritual.
Set the mood
Start with a warm soak in our CBD Ritual Bath: Dead Sea salt, pink Himalayan salt, whole plant hemp extract, herbs and a delicious mix of essential oils. Light a candle, turn on some music and give yourself time.
Made solely with organic, all-natural ingredients, our bath and body products are rich in the plant compounds that naturally occur in hemp, along with herbs and botanicals cherished for their soothing feel. You’ll step out feeling calm, relaxed and refreshed.
Add a little glide
A splash of our Massage Oil or Intimacy Oil helps your fingers glide smoothly during your exam, and they smell amazing.
Learn the steps
Here’s a video we love, featuring real women, to help you get comfortable doing your own breast self-exams.
If you feel a lump
Most women have some lumps or lumpy areas in their breasts, and most breast lumps turn out to be benign, caused by things like normal hormonal changes, a benign breast condition or an injury. Still, contact your healthcare provider about any new lump or change so it can be checked. Here’s some helpful advice on what to do next.
The more you get to know your breasts, the more confident you’ll feel caring for yourself. For more on breast health, visit breastcancer.org.
Women and Hemp: A Celebration of Ingenuity and Perseverance
Women have long been the caretakers of society, whether in the home or on the front lines of the fight for human rights.
From Eunice Newton Foote, the early climate science pioneer whose 1856 experiments shed light on the greenhouse effect more than a century before climate change entered the global conversation, to Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whose landmark brief in Reed v. Reed helped establish that the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment protects against sex discrimination, women have always pushed society forward.
This Women’s History Month, Moon Mother Hemp is celebrating women as healers and innovators who have championed hemp.
Women and hemp through history
Women’s relationship with hemp goes back thousands of years. Ancient Egyptian medical texts mention hemp among their remedies, and in the 19th century, Queen Victoria is said to have been prescribed a hemp tincture by her royal physician, during one of the most socially restrictive periods in England’s history.
Anthropologist Margaret Mead also spoke out on cannabis policy, testifying before a Senate hearing in 1969 at the height of her career. She was ahead of her time in warning against the harms the drug war would go on to cause, especially in targeted minority communities.
Modern pioneers
Women continue to champion hemp today. Valerie Corral co-founded the Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana in Santa Cruz, the country’s oldest continuously operating medical cannabis collective, and became a champion for patients and families, breaking down the stigma around the plant.
“When I opened Green Leaf Lab in 2011, my goal was to support consumer safety, quality control testing, and the legitimacy of an emerging industry.”
Rowshan Reordan, founder and CEO, Green Leaf Lab
Green Leaf Lab was the nation’s first woman-owned laboratory specializing in cannabis and hemp CBD analytics, and the first cannabis and hemp laboratory to be licensed and accredited by a state agency, a true commitment to consumer safety through quality science.
The many gifts of hemp
- Hemp fabric. Hemp crops absorb carbon as they grow, need little irrigation and help keep soil healthy, and hemp fiber is lightweight and absorbent yet much stronger than cotton.
- Hemp seeds. A nutritious snack with a healthy balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, plus fiber and plant protein.
- Hemp extracts. Hemp is cannabis with very low levels of THC, so it doesn’t produce a high, and its extracts are used in wellness products like ours.
Each of these women understood the value of this abundant plant, and women have always been quick to recognize and cultivate its gifts.
A Tail of Hope
We’re genuinely inspired by the stories you share with us. Take Molly and her 14-year-old, 20 lb beagle, Nina, a rescue Molly fondly calls her “second-hand girl.”
Like many pet parents, Molly spent years trying different brands before finding one she trusted. When her sister-in-law recommended Moon Mother Hemp, and her holistic vet gave it an enthusiastic thumbs up, she made the switch.
Finding the right routine
Nina now gets our Pet Care Tincture as part of her daily routine, morning and evening, with a little extra care from Molly along the way.
“Once I found the right serving for her, it just became part of our day.”
Molly
Molly found her own favorites too, especially our softgels, which she carries with her everywhere.
“I love their natural quality, versatility, ease of use and affordability. There are so many options: tinctures, balms, softgels…”
Molly
Spread the love
Molly can’t help but share. “Whether it’s family, friends or even strangers at my band performances, I love telling people about Moon Mother Hemp.”
Always talk with your veterinarian before adding anything new to your pet’s routine, especially if your pet is older or has health concerns.

A Simple Self-Care Routine for Everyday Wellbeing
Everyday stress can add to our daily load, but it doesn’t have to take over. We’re not medical professionals at Moon Mother Hemp, but we care about you and your wellbeing, so here’s how we build a simple self-care routine to support our mental and emotional health.
Why a routine? Routines give our days a steady rhythm, and a sense of rhythm and control can help us feel more grounded. Research also suggests that small lifestyle changes, like moving more and eating well, can make a real difference in how we feel.
1. Embrace the Big Six
- Eat real food. Think protein and leafy greens.
- Drink water.
- Sleep. Seven to nine hours is ideal.
- Move your body. Aim for 30 minutes a day.
- Get outside. Spend some time outdoors every day.
- Connect. Spend time with another human being.
2. Keep it clean
Do you ever come home and find you can’t decide what to make for dinner? Is your home feeling cluttered? Those are signs of “decision fatigue,” and when you’re already feeling low, every decision can feel heavier. The answer: spend 10 minutes a day tidying one thing that’s been sapping your energy. Even moving your shoes from the front hall to a closet can give you a welcome sense of control.
3. Plan your day the night before
When the to-do list feels endless, it helps to make a short list the night before, in order of what you want to accomplish, big or small, and focus on one thing at a time. Each item you check off is an affirmation and a small act of self-love. The idea isn’t to finish everything every day, but to remind yourself of what you’ve chosen to do for you, one step at a time.
4. Make it a ritual
Whether it’s a vitamin, a supplement or your daily CBD, the simple ritual of taking a moment for yourself each day is the next best thing to giving yourself a hug. Put yourself first, and the rest of the day can fall into place.
If you’re struggling with your mental health, please reach out to a healthcare professional or someone you trust. In the U.S., you can call or text 988 at any time to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Have a question about adding CBD to your self-care routine? We’re here to help. Reach out through our website, DM us @moonmotherhempco or give us a call. We’re with you.
Frankie’s Story: A Cat, His Family and a Nightly Ritual
To say that Frankie, an 8-year-old tuxedo cat, is a beloved member of the Vartanian family is an understatement. This fur baby is cherished by his family, even more so after Hilary and her husband became empty nesters and then weathered the pandemic together.
Hilary and her son, Alex, had wanted a cat for years, but her husband wasn’t a fan of the idea. Undeterred, they went to Animal Haven in New York City to meet the kittens. Frankie was the last of three brothers left from his litter, and when he climbed into Alex’s lap, it was a done deal: Frankie had found a home and a brother. Since then, Hilary’s husband has fallen hard for Frankie too.
Then Alex left for the University of Colorado Boulder, and 2020 arrived. Living in the heart of New York City, the family went into a full lockdown. Hilary describes it as “a very dark time. A very grim and scary time. But Frankie bolstered us emotionally. He gave us a sense of comfort and hope during those days of uncertainty.”
A frightening night
One night around 4 a.m., Frankie woke Hilary up, stumbling and unwell. In the middle of the pandemic, Hilary and her husband found a taxi and rushed him across town to the only animal hospital open in the city. Their veterinary team diagnosed a vestibular stroke, which can cause falling, a lack of coordination and a head tilt, and explained that with time, attention and nurturing, many cats recover to an almost normal life.
Recovering at home
With both Hilary and her husband home, they could care for Frankie around the clock. They prepared the house like you would for a toddler, laying pillows around the floor in case he lost his balance, carrying him to his food bowl and litter box, and lifting him onto his favorite sofa for a nap every day. Little by little, Frankie started getting his strength and confidence back.
Discovering Moon Mother
While settling Alex into his freshman year at CU, Hilary discovered our Boulder shop at the time and met our founder, Jessica Bates. They struck up a conversation about life and the big transition of sending a child off to college, and Hilary left with our Cinnamon hemp oil tincture and our CBD Dream Balm, which became part of her evening routine. She also picked up our CBD Muscle Balm for her husband, a lifelong hockey player.
A nightly ritual for Frankie
“I’ve always been focused on holistic health, and CBD quickly became part of my daily routine, but I hadn’t thought about how to incorporate CBD into our pet care.”
Hilary
Hilary reached out to us about our CBD Pet Care Topical Balm, and gently massaging a little of it around Frankie’s ears soon became their nightly ritual.
“Frankie loved it. He would curl up on my lap. It was like a cat massage. We continued to do this every night.”
Hilary
With his veterinarians’ care, and a lot of love and patience at home, Frankie kept getting stronger. Today he walks across the room without stumbling and is back to jumping onto his favorite spots. “He’s almost back to normal!” Hilary says.
Every pet is different. Always follow your veterinarian’s guidance, especially after an illness or injury, and check with your vet before adding anything new to your pet’s routine.
Moon Time Rituals: Self-Care for Your Cycle
At Moon Mother, we’re passionate about the role hemp can play in daily life, from farming and biodiversity to self-care. And as a woman-owned company, supporting women’s wellbeing is close to our hearts, including during your moon time, otherwise known as your period.
No two days of your cycle are the same, but a few consistent rituals can help you feel cared for through all of them. Here’s how we make CBD part of our moon time routine.
A quick word on CBD
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a naturally occurring compound from the hemp plant. It isn’t psychoactive and doesn’t produce the “high” associated with THC. Research into CBD and the menstrual cycle is still in its early days, so we think of our products as part of a comforting self-care ritual, not a treatment.
Our moon time rituals
A warm, slow soak
Warm water is one of the oldest comforts there is. Add our CBD Ritual Bath, with Dead Sea and pink Himalayan salts, whole plant hemp, herbs and essential oils, and let the salts melt into the water as you settle in. It’s a lovely addition to your evening routine.
A gentle massage
Massaging a balm into your belly and lower back with slow, circular movements is a luxurious way to take a moment for yourself. The lavender and chamomile notes of our Wise Woman Comfort Balm leave you feeling comforted and cared for.
Intimate self-care
Our Intimacy Oil can be part of your moon time self-care too, enjoyed alone or with a partner. It’s oil-based, so don’t use it with latex condoms.
Your daily tincture
Many women like to keep their daily CBD tincture routine going through every phase of their cycle, as a steady moment of calm for themselves.
If your periods are very painful, or your symptoms get in the way of daily life, talk with your healthcare provider. Painful periods can have causes that deserve a closer look.
Our commitment
The CBD industry is dominated by men, and we’re proud to be woman-owned. We’re dedicated to women’s wellbeing, and our Wise Woman products were created by our herbalist founder with every phase of the month in mind. Herbal traditions have stood the test of time, and we’re passionate about sharing what we know about hemp. Our mission is to provide high-quality, sustainable products that support you.
Why CBD Massage Oil Belongs in Your Next Massage
From textiles to farming, hemp is what we like to call a super-crop. CBD oil is extracted from this super-crop, and one of its loveliest uses is in massage oil, a welcome addition to any massage.
Massage is a wonderful way to ease tension and unwind, and the oil you choose matters. Massage oil reduces friction and helps hands glide smoothly over the skin. Our CBD massage oil has a silky texture that stays smooth, unlike mineral oils, which can turn tacky.
Why we love CBD massage oil
It turns a massage into a ritual
Whether it’s after a long day at a desk or a weekend on the trails, a massage with our CBD oil makes time for yourself feel special. Our oil pairs whole plant hemp extract with soothing lavender and silky jojoba oil, so you get a luxurious massage and the plant’s naturally occurring compounds in every application.
It cares for your skin
Oil is a natural moisturizer that helps keep skin soft and supple. Jojoba oil, one of nature’s finest moisturizers, leaves skin feeling smooth and comfortable, and the lavender essential oil soothes the skin and fills the room with a calming scent. Choosing a natural, organic oil means fewer unwanted chemicals on the largest organ in your body.
It helps you relax
Ask the millions of Americans who get regular massages, and they’ll tell you they feel better afterward. The process itself is relaxing, indulgent and soothing, and a beautiful oil makes it even more so. The bottom line is that you just feel better.
How to use it
You don’t always have to visit a professional to enjoy a great massage. At home, warm a few pumps of oil between your hands and massage it in with slow, circular motions, using more for a richer glide and more pressure to work into tense muscles.
If you’re getting a professional massage, bring your oil along and ask your massage therapist to use it for your session. They can use it just like any other massage oil. Practitioners can find our professional 16 fl oz sizes on our Bulk page.
Why choose Moon Mother?
We’re passionate about making a CBD massage oil that’s high-quality and organically produced. Based in Boulder, Colorado, we’re a family-run business, and our goal is to educate our community about CBD and build a sustainable future. We hope you enjoy your next massage with our CBD massage oil!
Michael’s Story: A Customer Testimonial
Michael is a 24-year-old sales professional from Austin, Texas, with a fast-paced job, an active lifestyle and a dog named Blanco. He’d tried CBD from other brands, and it was enough to keep him curious. Then a trip to Boulder changed his mind about what CBD could be. Here’s Michael’s story.
A lucky stop in Boulder
Michael was in Boulder visiting his sister, who was studying natural medicine, and he’d been hoping to find a good CBD shop. He was literally driving past Moon Mother Hemp Company, thought it looked cute and pulled in to check it out. He explored the products and talked with our team for quite a while.
“I’m decently knowledgeable about CBD, but the staff was extremely helpful, as I had a bunch of questions.”
Michael
He walked away with our organic hemp oil tincture, and it quickly became his favorite.
“The tincture that I first tried was nowhere near as good as Moon Mother’s tincture. It’s phenomenal.”
Michael
A moment of calm in a busy day
Michael works in tech sales, where back-to-back calls keep his days moving fast. By early to mid-afternoon, he takes a small serving of his tincture as a moment to pause, center himself and get back in his zone. Michael is also careful to note that CBD is one part of a broader self-care routine that includes working with professionals.
Muscle Balm for an active life
During his week in Boulder, Michael came back to the store a handful of times, and on one visit he picked up our CBD Muscle Balm. He does yoga, lifts weights and walks Blanco every day, and he wants to keep it that way.
“I want to continue to be active, and the muscle balm really helps me feel better.”
Michael
Like many of us, he also spends most of the day in front of a screen, so the balm goes on his neck and shoulders after long days at the computer. “And some days, I just slather it on all over,” he laughs.
Sharing the love, and a surprise phone call
Michael loved the products so much that he started buying them for his parents, who now use the tincture and the Muscle Balm regularly.
In fact, Michael started ordering so much that our founder, Jessica Bates, became a little concerned. “I decided to reach out to him just to make sure it wasn’t fraud,” she says. His answer? “No, I just love your products. I’ve been giving them to my family, and they’re crazy about them.” Jessica and Michael still laugh about it.
Why Michael chooses Moon Mother
“Quality is top of mind. And these products are far and away the best I’ve tried.”
Michael
He also loves supporting small businesses, and he values that we’re woman-owned. “My mom and sister are hard-working gals, and that’s something that’s pretty important to me.”
And ordering is easy. “I put my two things in my cart, and I’m done. It’s a three-minute process,” he laughs. Michael continues to buy Moon Mother products for himself and his family.
Individual experiences vary. If you have a health condition or take medications, talk with your healthcare provider before using CBD.
