Harvesting Gratitude

Here at Moon Mother Hemp, some of our most important lessons in gratitude come from the land: the rhythm of sowing and harvest, the companion plants that help organic hemp thrive, and the phases of the Moon that shape our work, our mission and the way we do business.

Research suggests that practicing gratitude can:

  • Support psychological wellbeing and better sleep.
  • Increase empathy.
  • Reduce aggression.
  • Enhance self-esteem.
  • Strengthen social connections.

Who couldn’t use a little more of that? As the seasons change and we settle in for winter, we want to share a simple mindfulness practice to carry you through the months ahead.

A gratitude walk

On your next walk, breathe deeply in through your nose and out through your mouth, and reflect on what surrounds you.

  1. Your environment. Take in the trees, the light, the sounds of the day and the people you pass, and say to yourself, “For this, I am grateful.”
  2. Your people. Think of your friends, your family and your partner, and say to yourself, “For this, I am grateful.”
  3. Yourself. You are a unique person with much to offer, able to learn from the past and plan for the future, with the resilience to meet what comes. Say to yourself, “For this, I am grateful.”
  4. Your life. Recognize that life is a gift, and that you have the awareness to appreciate it in all its variations. Say to yourself, “For this, I am grateful.”

Keep practicing

At Moon Mother Hemp, gratitude is at the heart of who we are and what we do. We’re thankful for the opportunity to be your partner in self-care, and for our growth, our team, and our wholesale and retail partners. We’ve got you.

In gratitude,

Hemp as an Eco-Solution

Sustainability starts with environmental awareness and education, which we’re passionate about here at Moon Mother. Together, let’s explore why and how we can support our planet, and why we believe hemp is part of the answer.

Why environmental awareness matters

Only by understanding our individual impact can we reduce it. That’s why, through 1% for the Planet, we partnered with Earth Guardians to spread environmental awareness, including a monthly discussion series for young people in our Boulder community. The first panel explored hemp as an eco-solution: a greener alternative that helps keep our planet healthy.

How hemp supports the environment

Hemp is so much more than CBD. As a natural material, it’s biodegradable and renewable, and it’s remarkably good for the soil it grows in.

Hemp improves soil health

Hemp’s benefits start when it’s planted. Hemp can draw contaminants, pollutants and toxins out of the soil and store them in its stalks and leaves, a process called bioremediation, leaving a healthier environment for the next crop. A four-year research project from the Rodale Institute found hemp to be a valuable addition to crop rotation, improving soil health and suppressing weeds, which makes it especially useful for organic farmers.

Textiles made from hemp

Hemp is one of the most sustainable textile fibers there is. It was likely among the first plants grown for textiles, in early civilizations in the Middle East and China, and only faded from use when its cultivation was prohibited in the 1930s. Hemp fabric feels similar to linen, making it perfect for summer clothing, and its strong, durable fibers are ideal for hard-wearing textiles like upholstery. Natural hemp fabric is biodegradable, too.

Paper made from hemp

China was the first country to make paper from hemp, and today hemp has a chance to reclaim its place as a sustainable resource. Deforestation is one of the human activities driving the environmental crisis, and hemp offers an alternative. It’s rich in cellulose, the main ingredient in paper, which makes it an excellent replacement for trees.

And so much more

Hemp can also be made into bioplastics and biofuels, reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. And in wellness, hemp gives us nutritious seeds and oils as well as CBD. We can’t wait to see hemp used in more mainstream ways.

Moon Mother’s commitment to the planet

Our goal is to support sustainability education and help build a future where the planet can thrive. We’ve built this commitment into our values, always looking for ways to give back, and we make every product as sustainably and purely as we can.

Farming beyond organic

Our hemp is USDA certified organic, and we aim to go further. Our hemp is grown without pesticides, the soil is protected with crop rotation and healthy plant cover to prevent erosion, and we avoid monocropping.

Even as a small, family-run business, we’re working toward becoming a carbon-negative brand. We believe in leading by example.

Holiday Glow: A Guide to Beauty from the Inside Out

It’s one of the great contradictions of this time of year: as the world sparkles with new-fallen snow and festive decorations, our own personal glow can fade under holiday stress, dry, cold weather and the hustle of parties and family gatherings.

Why not start a new tradition this season by putting yourself first, with quick and easy beauty rituals to bring out your glow from the inside out?

Tips for glowing skin

One of our favorite books on the subject is The Little Book of Healthy Beauty: Simple Daily Habits to Get You Glowing by Pina LoGiudice, ND, LAc (TarcherPerigee, 2016). This gem of a book is packed with natural, timeless wisdom about keeping your skin at its best, whatever the season throws at you.

Sleep is your best friend for a fresh, rested look, and a nighttime beauty ritual with Moon Mother Hemp helps you wind down and make the most of it. As Dr. LoGiudice writes, the foundation for a good night’s sleep includes:

  1. Aim for a bedtime between 10:30 and 11pm every night. Consistent sleep times train your brain and body to fall asleep and stay asleep. A nightly routine, moisturizing your skin and keeping electronics out of the bedroom all set the stage for calm.
  2. Try a self hug. Lying in bed, bend one arm across your chest and rest your hand on the opposite shoulder, then wrap your other arm around your waist. This gentle “self hug” feels like being swaddled and brings an instant sense of comfort.
  3. Adopt a bedtime mantra. Often the hardest part of falling asleep is quieting the mind. Breathe in and say to yourself “sleeeeep,” breathe out and say “noooow,” and repeat until you drift off.
  4. Make hemp part of your nightly beauty routine. Evening is a lovely time to care for your skin while it rests overnight. Our CBD serums are rich in natural antioxidants and deliver intense hydration, so you wake up to skin that looks and feels soft, calm and refreshed.

Our skincare products

Herbalist formulated, all of our skincare and body care products begin with the highest quality certified organic herbs, botanical butters and oils, and our whole plant hemp extract. Each one is carefully crafted by our founder, a certified clinical herbalist, for a harmonious blend of herbs, hemp and essential oils. You can rest easy knowing you’re giving your skin 100% organic TLC.

Glow Skin Serum

Glow is a daily moisturizer suitable for all skin types. Nourishing, balancing herbs are infused in jojoba oil and argan oil with rose and our whole plant hemp extract, harnessing the power of Mother Nature to soothe, moisturize and replenish your skin. Apply 1 or 2 pumps to cleansed, dry skin in a circular motion, or pump the serum into your hands and gently press it into your skin.

“Natural ingredients are a mainstay of all Moon Mother products, but they especially shine in the brand’s Glow Skin Serum. The serum makes moisturizing magic by combining full spectrum hemp extract with argan oil, rose, and jojoba oil. Hemp oil [is] soothing on skin, so it’s no surprise that this serum made a much-needed difference in managing my post-winter dry skin. After just a few days, I was waking up to softer, happier skin.”

Claire Hannum, writer and editor, Beautytap

Renew Eye Serum

Renew your eyes with our hemp eye serum, made to reduce the look of fine lines and puffiness. Our proprietary seed-oil blend is restorative and rejuvenating, and brightens and plumps the look of tired skin. Roll it gently under your eyes before bed, keep one at your desk for a refreshing swipe during the day, or apply it before a day on the slopes for extra moisture in cold, windy weather.

Nourish CBD & Manuka Honey Mask

Nourish is a nourishing, mineral-rich mask that leaves skin hydrated and glowing, and helps it look younger and more radiant with every use. Spread a thin layer over your face and leave it on for 20 minutes before rinsing, or use it as a daily cleanser to help brighten the look of your skin.

The Skin Care Bundle

Want it all this season? Put our Skin Care Bundle, with Glow, Renew and Nourish together, on your holiday wish list, and start every day glowing.

“I am currently using the Glow Skin Serum and CBD Renew Eye Serum every day and have seen a difference in how smooth and hydrated my skin is. The Nourish CBD & Manuka Honey Mask is such a great treat: my skin felt hydrated and nourished, and looked amazing. I would definitely recommend Moon Mother Hemp to anyone who wants to use a CBD line with good quality ingredients.”

3 Questions to Ask When Buying CBD

Shopping for CBD can feel daunting. There are a lot of products out there, and it isn’t always easy to tell them apart. Here are three questions to help you feel empowered when choosing quality CBD.

1. Is it made with certified organic hemp?

This is one of the most important questions to ask, because the quality of a CBD product starts with the quality of the hemp. Hemp is a bioaccumulator, which means it takes up whatever is in the soil it grows in, including unwanted contaminants. Hemp grown to certified organic standards avoids synthetic pesticides and is held to strict rules about what goes into the soil.

At Moon Mother, our products are made with USDA certified organic hemp from small farms in Colorado.

2. How was it extracted?

Extraction is how raw hemp becomes a refined, easy-to-use product. Look for brands that avoid harsh hydrocarbon solvents like butane and propane, and choose CO2, alcohol or oil infusion instead.

Because we want to preserve as much of the plant’s natural character as possible, we use clean CO2 extraction for our whole plant hemp extract.

3. Are third-party lab results easy to find?

The FDA doesn’t evaluate CBD products before they’re sold, so independent testing matters. Lab reports from a third party are a sign of transparency, and they help you confirm that what’s on the label is what’s in the bottle.

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) shows a product’s cannabinoid content and screens for heavy metals, pesticides and microbes. You’ll find ours on our Lab results page.

Take your time

Above all, do your research, and reach out to our team if you have questions about bringing CBD into your routine. You can also read what our customers have to say on Trustpilot.

How Much Does CBD Oil Cost? Are You Paying Too Much?

When you’re shopping for CBD, there are many factors to consider, from quality and ingredients to brand and price. And when it comes to the question “How much is CBD oil?” there isn’t one set answer.

CBD is a relatively young industry, and few standards have been set, so you’ll find a wide range of prices, from budget options to very expensive products. It can be hard to understand why those differences exist. As a brand that makes our own CBD products, we can share some insight into why prices vary from brand to brand, so you can shop with confidence.

Why do CBD prices differ so much?

Like any product, there are many ways to produce and sell CBD, and some cost more than others. Three main factors affect the price of CBD oil:

  • The production process. How the hemp is grown and how the CBD is extracted.
  • Quality and strength. The ingredients used and how much CBD is in each product.
  • Branding. How much of the price reflects marketing rather than what’s in the bottle.

The production process

Growing and harvesting

How hemp is grown affects price, because some methods cost more than others. Earth-friendly practices like growing organically, without synthetic pesticides, take more time and resources.

Extraction methods

There are three common ways to extract CBD, and some cost more than others:

  • Ethanol extraction. Uses high-grain alcohol to pull CBD from the plant. It’s common and efficient.
  • Oil extraction. Uses a carrier oil, such as olive oil, to extract CBD. It’s simpler and less expensive, but produces a less concentrated extract.
  • CO2 extraction. Uses pressurized carbon dioxide to extract CBD cleanly, with no petroleum-based solvents. It’s widely considered the gold standard for quality, and it costs more, which is often reflected in the price. It’s the method we use at Moon Mother Hemp.

Quality and strength

Most CBD products contain more than CBD. A tincture has a carrier oil, and a balm has butters, herbs and essential oils. The quality of those ingredients, organic or not, affects the price too.

Strength matters as well. With a tincture, you can choose different strengths, and the higher the concentration of CBD, the higher the price. Different types of products, from tinctures and topicals to softgels, edibles and inhalants, also contain different amounts of CBD. To learn more about each type, read our guide, What Is CBD?

Paying for quality, or paying for branding?

It’s natural to assume that a higher price means higher quality. That can be true with CBD, but some brands position themselves as luxury products simply to charge more. Fortunately, there are ways to cut through the marketing.

Look at the Certificate of Analysis

A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a report from an accredited third-party lab that breaks down what’s in a CBD product: its cannabinoid content, and screening for microbials, pesticides, residual solvents, heavy metals and mycotoxins. Reputable companies happily publish their COAs, and it’s a sign they’re transparent with their customers.

A COA shows whether corners were cut in production, for example whether pesticides were used on the hemp, or whether traces of solvents like methanol or acetone remain.

Find a company you trust

Companies that pride themselves on integrity and transparency make all the information you need to decide easily available on their site.

Compare the cost per milligram

The best product for you depends on what matters most to you. Clean, organic formulas and higher strengths usually cost more. To compare value across brands, work out the cost per milligram of CBD:

Total price ÷ total mg of CBD = cost per mg

Moon Mother productPriceCost per mg
Tincture, 500 mg$40$0.08 per mg
Tincture, 2000 mg$120$0.06 per mg
Softgels, 25 mg × 30$48$0.064 per mg
Tincture, 2000 mg with Subscribe & Save$72$0.036 per mg

CBD products from Moon Mother Hemp

At Moon Mother, every product is made with intention and care, for our customers and for Mother Nature. We’re committed to quality and to being kind to the environment.

We want to empower our customers with transparency, which is why we publish the Certificate of Analysis for every batch of every product. You’ll find it on each product page, so you always know exactly what you’re getting.

Does CBD Oil Expire? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

If CBD oil is part of your wellness routine, it can’t last forever, just like any supplement. Over time, the quality and potency of CBD oil and other CBD products can decline. How long yours lasts depends on how you use it and how well you store it.

Generally speaking, the shelf life of CBD oil is around two years, though that isn’t guaranteed for every product. After two years, a product is likely to have lost some of its potency. And that two-year estimate assumes the product has been stored in the right conditions and used correctly.

Does CBD oil go bad?

Like most products, CBD oils can expire. How quickly depends on a few factors:

  • How long you keep it.
  • How you use it.
  • How you store it.

Light, heat and air can all break down cannabinoids and reduce potency, and anything that touches the product, like fingers or a dropper that isn’t clean, can introduce bacteria.

How long does a bottle of CBD oil last?

If you use CBD regularly, you’ll most likely finish a bottle in weeks or months, well before its shelf life is up. If you use it only occasionally, a bottle might last many months, which makes storing it well even more important.

The same two-year guideline applies to most CBD products, from tinctures and capsules to topicals and skincare, though a product’s formulation can affect its shelf life.

How to make your CBD last

Follow the instructions

It may seem obvious, but the directions on your label, box or product page describe the best way to care for each product, including details you might not have considered.

Keep it out of the sun

High-quality CBD oil comes in a dark bottle designed to protect it from light. Store it somewhere cool, dry and dark, like a drawer, pantry or cupboard, since direct sunlight and heat break down cannabinoids.

Limit air exposure

Oxygen gradually degrades CBD oil, so close the cap tightly after each use.

Does CBD oil need to be refrigerated?

You can keep CBD oil in the refrigerator, but it isn’t necessary. A cool, dry, dark cupboard works perfectly.

Caring for other CBD products

Topicals

With balms and skincare in jars, dipping your fingers in can introduce bacteria. To avoid it, wash your hands before use, or use a clean small spoon or spatula to scoop out the product.

Softgels and capsules

Store them like tinctures: in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, in a tightly closed container.

How Long Does CBD Stay in Your System?

How long does CBD stay in your system? Like many things, there isn’t one simple answer, because so many factors play a part. Let’s explore them, starting with how CBD works.

How does CBD work?

Humans have an endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of cannabinoid receptors, signaling molecules and enzymes found in the brain and throughout the body. Researchers are studying its role in many processes, including mood, stress, appetite and sleep. CBD and other compounds from hemp interact with this system. To learn more, read our guide, What Is CBD?

How does the form of CBD affect absorption?

The way you take CBD affects how it’s absorbed and how long it stays in your system. When you swallow CBD, your digestive system breaks it down first, so it takes longer to absorb. When you hold CBD oil under your tongue, some of it is absorbed directly, so it acts more quickly. CBD comes in many forms:

  • Tinctures. An oil taken under the tongue or swallowed.
  • Topicals. Balms, oils and lotions applied to the skin.
  • Softgels and capsules.
  • Edibles.
  • Inhalants.

How long does it take to notice?

It varies with your size, the form you use and more. In general, a tincture held under the tongue is absorbed fairly quickly, often within about 15 minutes, while softgels and capsules can take one to two hours.

What is CBD’s half-life?

A half-life is the time it takes for the amount of a substance in your body to drop by half. Research suggests CBD’s half-life varies widely with how it’s taken and how often: from a few hours after a single low serving, to roughly two to five days for people who take CBD by mouth every day over a long period. Many factors play a part, including:

  • Serving size.
  • How often you take it.
  • The form you use.
  • Your body and metabolism.
  • Whether you have eaten.
  • Your age.
  • Any medications you take.

Will CBD show up on a drug test?

Most drug tests look for THC, not CBD. Hemp products contain only trace amounts of THC, but those traces can build up over time, so it’s possible to test positive, especially with whole plant products like ours. If you’re drug tested for work or sport, talk with your employer or a medical professional before use. Learn more in our FAQ.

In summary

There isn’t a single answer to how long CBD stays in your system, because it depends on so many variables. There’s still a lot to learn about CBD, and experiences vary from person to person, which is why we always suggest starting low, going slow and paying attention to how you feel.

CBD and Sex: Bringing Hemp into Your Intimate Self-Care

Sexual wellness is a natural part of life that helps us feel our best and in tune with our bodies. For many women, it also carries an age-old taboo. We believe exploring your body and your sensual energy is an act of self-care and self-love, and hemp can be a lovely part of that ritual.

Why we made our CBD Intimacy Oil

We believe sexual wellness is an integral part of every woman’s wellness journey. That’s why we created our CBD Intimacy Oil, made to use solo or with a partner, and formulated to help you feel confident, relaxed and at home in your body.

Like all our products, it’s made with all-natural, organic ingredients that draw on the power of Mother Nature, kind to your skin and to the environment:

  • Organic MCT oil (from coconut)
  • Apricot kernel oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Rose
  • Tulsi
  • Calendula
  • Whole plant hemp extract

Ways to use it

No two women, and no two vaginas, are the same, so we designed our Intimacy Oil to be versatile:

  • As an intimate moisturizer. Smooth it on before a sensual experience to help you feel confident and relaxed.
  • After waxing. Its botanical blend is soothing on freshly waxed skin.
  • As a massage oil. Massage yourself or your partner to explore and deepen your connection.

Our Intimacy Oil is oil-based, and oils can weaken latex. Don’t use it with latex condoms, as it can make them less effective at preventing pregnancy and STIs.

Make it part of your self-care

Hemp is one of the most versatile ingredients in wellness. Bringing it into your intimate self-care can help you create a sensual atmosphere, feel empowered and embrace your sexuality, on your own terms.

Herbal Spotlight: Calendula

At Moon Mother Hemp Company, we care just as much about thoughtful herbal formulas as we do about CBD content. Each of our topicals is formulated by our founder, a certified clinical herbalist, to blend our whole plant hemp extract with certified organic herbs chosen to work in harmony.

What is calendula?

Calendula (Calendula officinalis) has been cherished for centuries for ornamental, culinary and cosmetic uses. You may know it as pot marigold. It isn’t a true marigold (those belong to a different genus), but its bright orange and yellow blooms look a lot alike.

Why we love it

Calendula is one of the herbal powerhouses in our line. It’s a traditional favorite in herbal skincare, prized for its gentle, soothing feel, and it has been infused into salves, oils, lotions and creams for generations. Many herbalists also enjoy it as a tea.

Grow your own

Calendula is easy to grow, even in pots. Harvest the flowers in the heat of summer, ideally midday, when their oils are at their peak. The petals can be tossed fresh into salads, stews and broths, or dried and saved for herbal preparations later.

You’ll find calendula in our Skin Balm and our Glow Skin Serum.
