The Meaning Behind the Moon Mother Hemp Name
Moon, Mother, Hemp: the story behind each word, and what it means to us.

We’re often asked about the meaning of our name. It’s simple, but there’s real significance behind it. To tell the story properly, we need to look at each word and the part it plays in who we are.
Moon
Symbolizes the rhythm of time
After her second child was born, our founder, Jessica Bates, CCH, found herself working on her botanicals at night. She began crafting products under the moon, and in step with its phases.
Women and herbalists have crafted their preparations in rhythm with the moon for as long as there have been herbalists. Many believe each phase lends its own energy to the work, depending on the phase and the intention behind it.
That rhythm has shaped our line from the start, from planting hemp seeds near the spring equinox to timing harvests with the moon cycles and the turn of the seasons. Today, the moon still guides how we make our products. Our CBD Dream Balm, for example, draws on the slow, dark energy of the new moon: it’s started on a full moon and decanted on a new moon, to create a quiet balm made for your evening wind-down.
Mother
Represents creation and nurturing
The Moon Mother line has something for everyone in the household, and we firmly support ending the stigma around parents, especially mothers, using hemp. As parents themselves, Edward and Jessica found CBD a welcome part of their own routines.
Jessica’s dedication to women’s health and wellbeing plays a role in everything we make. Our Wise Woman line features a CBD Comfort Balm and CBD Ritual Bath, created as a soothing ritual for your moon time.
The entire line is organic, and every ingredient is carefully selected to support wellbeing for body and mind, so it’s simple to fit moments of self-care into a mother’s everyday.
Hemp
An expression of healing and peace
We have a passion for extremely clean products that are safe for this generation and sustainable for the next. Hemp doesn’t just support the wellness of individuals; it also plays a deep role in caring for the earth.
That’s why we choose USDA certified organic hemp from small Colorado farms, and value practices that go beyond standard organic guidelines:
- No pesticides in the soil, since hemp can absorb what’s in the ground and pass it on to you.
- No monocropping, to reduce the spread of pests and disease.
- Crop rotation, to maintain the integrity of the soil.
- Cover crops, to prevent erosion.
And there you have it: the meaning behind each word in our name. Committed to quality from seed to sale, and connected to our community through the moon, mothers and hemp.
