About CBD
What is CBD?
CBD (cannabidiol) is a naturally occurring compound that comes from the hemp plant. It's one of more than 100 compounds in hemp known as cannabinoids, and one of the most abundant.
Cannabinoids can come from plants (phytocannabinoids) or be produced naturally by the body (endocannabinoids), and they interact with the endocannabinoid system, a signaling system involved in keeping the body in balance. Researchers are studying its role in processes such as appetite, mood, memory, sleep and immune function.

How does CBD work in the body?
CBD is a phytocannabinoid, a cannabinoid that comes from a plant. Our bodies naturally produce their own endocannabinoids, which bind to cannabinoid receptors in both the central and peripheral nervous systems.
CBD interacts with this endocannabinoid system too, though mostly indirectly: unlike THC, it has little direct binding to cannabinoid receptors. Research into exactly how it works is ongoing.

Will CBD make me high?
Not at typical servings. Our whole plant hemp extracts contain only trace amounts of THC, the compound that causes a high, so at the suggested serving they aren't expected to produce one. That lets you enjoy the plant's naturally occurring compounds while keeping a clear mind.
Large amounts are different. THC adds up, and taking much more than the suggested serving can cause a noticeable THC “high.” Stick to the suggested serving and increase gradually.
Please don't drive or operate heavy machinery after taking our ingestible products until you know how they affect you, and never after taking more than the suggested serving. For drug testing, see Will I fail a drug test? below.
Will I fail a drug test when using whole plant (full spectrum) hemp extract?
It's absolutely possible to fail a drug test when using whole plant hemp extract. All of our products contain trace amounts of THC, which can build up in your system over time and cause a failed drug test.
If you're drug tested for work or sport, talk with your employer or a medical professional before use.
Using our products
What tincture strength and serving are right for me?
Although we can't diagnose or prescribe, we can share common servings and what typically works for our customers.
Your ideal serving depends on many factors, including your size, weight and other physiological considerations, as well as your goals. Many people begin with a 10 mg serving taken orally (swallowed, or held under the tongue for 60 seconds) one to three times a day, then gradually increase or decrease the serving size and frequency as desired. A common adult serving ranges from 10 to 50 mg of hemp extract per day.
For a 10 mg serving, draw the oil to the 0.6 mL line on the 500 mg bottle, 0.3 mL on the 1000 mg or 0.15 mL on the 2000 mg. A higher strength means less oil per serving and more servings per bottle.
How can I see the Certificate of Analysis for my product?
Go to Learn → Lab Results (COAs), or click View lab results on any product page. Then enter the 5-digit batch number printed on the bottom of your product to see its lab results.
How is our hemp oil extracted?
All of our hemp oil tinctures, topicals and pet care products are made with CO2-extracted whole plant hemp extract. We never use petroleum-based solvents.
At normal atmospheric temperature and pressure, carbon dioxide is a gas. For extraction, it's cooled and compressed until it reaches its supercritical point, above about 88°F and 1,070 psi, where it behaves like both a gas and a liquid. Under controlled conditions, supercritical CO2 dissolves the plant's compounds into “fractions” that can be separated.
Why CO2 is so well suited to botanical extraction:
- It's naturally occurring. CO2 exists all around us, and our bodies produce it.
- It's among the safest solvents. The FDA classifies CO2 as Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) for use in food processing, making it far less controversial than petroleum-based hydrocarbons such as butane or propane.
- It works at low temperatures. CO2 becomes supercritical at around 88°F, so the plant's delicate, volatile compounds are less likely to be damaged.
- It's precise. CO2's solvency changes with pressure, allowing different compounds to be separated, including cannabinoids like THCA, CBD, CBG and CBC, as well as terpenes.
