7 Reasons Why CBD for Pets Is a Smart Idea

AT MOON MOTHER HEMP we are often asked if CBD is safe for pets.  We say yes!

When Colorado legalized recreational marijuana in 2012, it wasn’t something veterinarian Stephanie McGrath thought much about day to day. But then the phone calls started coming. Pet owners and family veterinarians wanted to know what she thought about medical marijuana in relation to animals, and whether she was researching it.

“Around 2013 or 2014, I started looking into what research was already out there and I realized that there was essentially no real, good scientific literature in the human world, let alone the veterinary research world,” says McGrath, assistant professor of neurology at Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. “I started investigating whether it would even be plausible for me to conduct any research.”

McGrath went on to become one of the pioneering researchers in the field veterinary cannabis as people increasingly turn to CBD products to treat their pet’s pain, anxiety, and seizure disorders. (Source: CNET September 13, 2019)

Here are our top 7 reasons to consider CBD for your pet.

  1. CBD is a Powerful Painkiller

In 1997, a study published in the European Journal of Pharmacology showed that the endocannabinoid system was deeply involved in managing pain.

Today, CBD has become renowned for its painkilling properties.

CBD can help manage pain in many different ways.

First of all, studies have shown that CBD can temporarily stop the absorption of anandamide, a chemical that helps dampen pain signals in the brain.

This temporary delay in anandamide absorption can have various effects, one of them being reduced pain sensations.

Secondly, CBD has been shown to be a powerful anti inflammatory (we’ll explore this in more detail below).

By reducing the inflammation caused by conditions such as arthritis, for example, CBD is also able to reduce the painful symptoms caused by the condition.

  1. CBD is a Known Anticonvulsant

One of the best-known medicinal uses for CBD is its ability to help controls seizures, tremors, tics, and spasms. That’s because CBD is a natural anticonvulsant.

multiple studies have shown that CBD can help manage seizures caused by epilepsy.

Other studies have also shown that both CBD and THC can help manage spasticity caused by multiple sclerosis, and research also suggests that CBD can help manage the tics and tremors caused by Tourette’s syndrome. Seizures are generally believed to be caused by the rapid, uncontrolled firing of neurons in the brain. Preliminary research suggests CBD can help restore order to these neurons, causing them to fire normally and essentially prevent the onset of seizures.

  1. CBD is Anti-Inflammatory

CBD is renowned for its anti inflammatory effects. The anti-inflammatory effects of CBD are believed to be one of the main reasons the compound is so useful in treating a wide variety of conditions.

  1. CBD Reduces Anxiety and Stress

Much like humans, pets can also suffer from anxiety, stress or even specific phobias. CBD has been shown to help reduce feelings of anxiety and thereby reduce these symptoms.

  1. CBD is an Antiemetic

Both in humans and dogs, nausea and vomiting are serious symptoms, often leading to a decreased appetite, rapid weight loss, dehydration, fatigue, and more. Some of the most common antiemetic medications given to dogs and cats include acepromazine, chlorpromazine and aminopentamide. While often effective in controlling nausea and vomiting, they can cause a wide variety of side effects. There is a strong body of evidence that shows that CBD is a successful antiemetic, controlling both nausea and vomiting while also stimulating appetite.

  1. CBD May Slow Tumor Growth

Cancer and malicious tumors are common in pets and, in many cases, prove to be fatal.

Until now, there is no known cure for cancer, and treatment usually focuses on slowing the growth of a tumor while reducing pain and other symptoms. The most common treatment for cancer and tumors in pets is chemotherapy. Unfortunately, like with humans, chemotherapy can produce a wide variety of side effects.  A growing body of research is beginning to explore just how cannabinoids can help slow the growth and spread of cancer and even reduce the size of tumors.

  1. CBD Promotes Homeostasis

Homeostasis can best be described as the proper functioning of the body. Many pet owners choose to use CBD not only as a medicine to treat a specific illness, but also as a regular supplement to promote the overall health and wellbeing of their pet.

Below is what you need to know if you’re considering CBD for your furry friend.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol is a class of chemical compounds naturally found in the cannabis plant. Cannabinoids interact with the human body’s endocannabinoid system, which helps the body maintain homeostasis.

Is CBD safe for animals?

CBD, in its pure state, appears to be safe and well-tolerated by animals, according to a 2017 World Health Organization report. Legally, CBD products must contain no more than 0.3% THC, which should be safe for animals.

How is CBD administered to animals?

CBD pet care products come in the same form that humans use.

At Moon Mother Hemp our pet owners use our best-selling pet care balm and tincture. The tincture can be added to food or placed under the tongue and our topical balm can be rubbed directly on the skin, paws and inner ears.

Jessica Bates, founder of Moon Mother Hemp and certified herbalist recommends the following dosage. Apply 4 drops (1 mg) per 10 lbs of pet weight to treats, food, water or topically. Do not put glass dropper in or near your pet’s mouth.

IMPACT OF CBD PRODUCTS ON ANIMALS

Will CBD get my animal high?

CBD found in cannabis pet supplements is usually sourced from hemp, a variety of cannabis that naturally contains extremely low concentrations of THC, which is the main psychoactive compound found in marijuana. As a result, CBD is non psychoactive and appears safe to be used on pets.

Can CBD cause an overdose in pets?

CBD has no known toxicity level and, if used as directed, is unlikely to cause an overdose.

Can my cat use these products?

These products are available for both dogs and cats.
